– Amina Mohammed says she believes that a woman will take over from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023
– The top UN official promises to be the campaign manager for such a woman when it is time
– The former minister says Nigeria is experiencing a growing democracy still riddled with challenges The deputy secretary-general of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, has predicted that a woman would succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
Mohammed, who was Nigeria’s environment minister in the government before she resigned to take up the UN job, said this at the Mo Ibrahim governance weekend in Abidjan. She expressed readiness to become the campaign manager for the woman when the time comes. Mohammed, asked when Nigeria will produce a female president, said: “2023, Insha Allah.” Asked if she would take part in 2023, she explained that it was not a problem because her life has been of one that serves.
“But let me be truthful here, I have always thought that I am appointable and not electable. “I think the political system that we have in our country, I believe in democracy, but I think the model for us, where we are is an incredibly difficult environment to say you would come to office through the will of the people. “I think the manipulation of democracy is a very serious issue in our countries. We have a population, as I said, has a level of literacy that can be manipulated, that is not right,” she said. Concerning the election of President Buhari which she called a miracle, she noted that that democracy in Nigeria is a work in progress. “I think this is a work in progress, democracy in my country is a work in progress, it is incredibly difficult, and that is why I believe that I’d make a really good campaign manager for the next woman president “We need to start from today to get a woman in power in 2023,” she said.
